Top story: McKinsey alum among the ~30 staffers in Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)

Source: McKinsey
McKinsey Influence: Kendall Lindemann, a former McKinsey consultant, is among the 30-member White House DOGE team, bringing strategy expertise to federal efficiency efforts.
Government Overhaul: DOGE, operating under Trump’s second term, focuses on dismantling agencies, reducing staff, and optimizing federal spending, with tech and finance experts leading the charge.
Strategic Shift: With a McKinsey-inspired approach, DOGE prioritizes data-driven restructuring, reflecting broader trends of corporate-style efficiency in public-sector transformation.
McKinsey made its way into Elon Musk’s DOGE… sort of.
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team, operating under the second Trump administration, is rapidly reshaping the federal government with aggressive cost-cutting and restructuring efforts. Among the 30 known DOGE staffers, a key hire stands out for consultants—Kendall Lindemann, a former McKinsey consultant with a background in healthcare finance.
Lindemann, who worked at McKinsey for about two years, transitioned to venture capital at Russell Street Ventures in 2024, a firm founded by Brad Smith, the senior official leading DOGE’s initiatives. Smith’s track record in government healthcare reform under Trump’s first term aligns with DOGE’s mission—streamlining agencies, reducing bureaucracy, and optimizing federal expenditures.
The presence of McKinsey alumni in government efficiency efforts is not new, as the firm has historically advised both corporate and public-sector clients on operational restructuring. The DOGE team's strategic approach—leveraging management consulting principles in tech-driven cost-cutting—bears hallmarks of McKinsey-style optimization.
Beyond Lindemann, DOGE’s ranks include professionals with backgrounds in tech, finance, and law, mirroring the composition of a McKinsey engagement team tackling complex, multi-disciplinary transformations. Musk has assembled software engineers, Supreme Court clerks, and investment professionals, indicating a preference for high-caliber, analytically driven talent.
While details on DOGE’s specific strategies remain scarce, the group's composition suggests a McKinsey-inspired approach to operational efficiency—leveraging data-driven insights, restructuring inefficiencies, and prioritizing cost-saving initiatives.
